Top 10 interview questions at ANZ, Westpac and CBA, and how to answer them
Interviewing at one of the big Australian banks, ANZ, Westpac, Commonwealth Bank, NAB, is a different experience to a startup chat. The process is structured, values-led, and heavy on behavioural questions. The good news is that this makes it predictable. Prepare for the patterns and you walk in calm.
A quick note before the questions: the banks lean hard on values and conduct. Since the Royal Commission, "doing the right thing", customer outcomes and risk awareness run through everything. Weave those themes through your answers honestly and you will sound like someone who gets it.
The structure that answers most of them: STAR
Most of these are behavioural questions, and behavioural questions are best answered with STAR:
- Situation, set the scene briefly.
- Task, what you needed to achieve.
- Action, what you did (not the team, you).
- Result, the outcome, quantified where you can.
Keep it to about 90 seconds. Practise out loud, because knowing the answer and saying it under pressure are two different skills.
The 10 questions
1. Tell me about a time you put a customer first. They are testing customer-centricity. Pick a moment where you went beyond the minimum, and name the outcome for the customer.
2. Describe a time you had to make a decision with incomplete information. This is about judgement and risk. Show how you weighed the unknowns rather than freezing or guessing.
3. Tell me about a mistake you made and what you did about it. They want accountability, not a humble-brag. Choose a real mistake, own it cleanly, and focus on what you changed.
4. How do you handle competing priorities and deadlines? Organisation and composure. Describe your actual method for triaging, and a time it worked.
5. Give an example of working with a difficult stakeholder. Influence and emotional intelligence. Show how you found common ground, not how you won.
6. Why do you want to work for [bank], specifically? Do your homework. Reference their recent strategy, a value that resonates with you, and connect it to your own goals. Generic answers lose here.
7. Tell me about a time you identified a risk or a problem before it escalated. Risk awareness is gold in banking. Show that you spot issues early and raise them.
8. Describe a time you had to adapt to significant change. Banks are mid-transformation. They want resilience and a positive attitude to change, with an example to prove it.
9. How do you ensure accuracy in your work? Attention to detail and a controls mindset. Describe your checks, and a time they caught something.
10. Where do you see yourself in three to five years? Ambition that fits their world. Show you have thought about growth and that you see a future with them.
Smart questions to ask them
You will be asked if you have questions. Have two or three ready, for example:
- "How is the team adapting to [a recent change you researched]?"
- "What does success look like in this role in the first six months?"
- "How does the team balance customer outcomes with risk and compliance day to day?"
Practise the way you will perform
Reading a list of questions is not preparation. Saying your answers out loud, hearing where you ramble, and tightening them is. That is what CVelo's interview coach does: it generates questions tailored to the specific bank and role, you record your answers by voice, and you get a score, the gaps to fix, and a strong model answer to learn from. It will also brief you on the company before you walk in.
Prepare the patterns, practise out loud, and bring genuine examples. The banks are not trying to trick you. They are trying to find someone who will do the right thing by their customers. Show them that is you.
